Steve Elzer serves as the chief liaison between Columbia Pictures senior management and journalists and bloggers who represent national consumer media and industry trade publications. In addition, he works closely with publicity supervisors from each of Sony Pictures’ public relations divisions to advise on implementation of long-term studio communications strategies as well as assist with crisis communications.
For more than 20 years, Elzer has worked in entertainment media relations and has been integral to the launch of more than 250 motion pictures and several television series.
Elzer joined the Sony’s Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group in 2001 as Senior Vice President of Media Relations. Since joining the studio, he has worked on such hit films as Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3, Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, The Social Network, District 9, Grown Ups, The Other Guys, Mall Cop, Hancock, 21, Julie & Julia, Superbad, The DaVinci Code, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, Hitch, Pineapple Express, Click, Step Brothers, The Pursuit of Happyness, 50 First Dates, Men in Black, Bad Boys II, Anger Management, Panic Room, Something’s Gotta Give, XXX, Black Hawk Down, and many others. He is currently working on campaigns for upcoming films such as The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Men in Black 3 and Spider-Man, directed by Marc Webb.
During his years at the studio, Sony has released more nearly 70 #1 films and the company has grossed more than $1 billion in domestic marketshare for nine consecutive years (2002-2010), a record matched by only one other competitor.
Prior to joining the Sony-owned subsidiary Columbia Pictures, Elzer was the primary spokesman for New Line Cinema, where he served as Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications. During his seven year tenure at New Line, he was a key member of the publicity team that launched such hits as The Lord of the Rings, Rush Hour 2, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Seven, The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, Boogie Nights, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, Rush Hour, Wag the Dog and Michael.
He began his publicity career at the Fox Broadcasting Company in 1989 and later served as the network’s in-house publicist for memorable series such as “In Living Color” as well as numerous specials including The Emmy Awards, The Billboard Music Awards and more than a dozen motion pictures for television.
Elzer is married and is the father of two. He is a voting member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and serves on the Board of Directors for the Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation and the Los Angeles Entertainment Publicists Professional Society.
